ULS petitions IGP over Miria Matembe arrest
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has written to the Inspector of Police (IGP), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Boss seeking to allow Miria Matembe to be produced to court following her arrest on Sunday.
The Vice President of ULS Counsel Asiimwe Anthony while talking to journalists at the home of Miria Matembe in Luzira said that the family of Matembe has handed to ULS the responsibility to follow up the case of Miria Matembe through court until she regains her freedom.
“The family of Mzee Matembe has petitioned Uganda Law Society to give them all the legal support. Mzee Matembe has failed to get any Information regarding his wife. He went to police and he was not given any report” he said
He told journalists in the interview that ULS has petitioned the IGP Byakagaba, CID Boss Magambo and the head of legal affairs Moses Wandera at UPDF, to reveal the case their client has been accused of, produced in court and follow the legal procedures.
“We are advocating for the release of Miria Matembe, on 25th June 2026 she went missing. On Sunday we received information that she has been arrested and detained to an accessible place. If she is suspected for an offense, let her be produced to Court. You can’t deny personal liberty. We have written the IGP, CID and UPDF. he said
He added that “We are demanding that she be given a bond. The police Act says that if someone is arrested should be produced in court not more than 48 hours” he said
Mzee Matembe who expressed discouragement said that he handed everything concerning the arrest of her wife to ULS following failure to get any report from Police despite his attempt to look for her.
“No one has communicated to me, everyone has the same sentiment. I have no idea where my wife is. Iam glad I have not seen more arrests at home” he narrated .
