Ugandan Scientist Dr. Matthias Magoola Named Among Africa’s 100 Most Influential People

 Dr. Matthias Magoola, a prominent Ugandan scientist and the founder of Dei BioPharma, has been officially named among the 100 Most Influential People in Africa. The prestigious continental accolade recognizes his visionary leadership in biotechnology and his groundbreaking innovations aimed at reducing Africa’s heavy reliance on imported pharmaceutical products.

Dr. Magoola received the honor at the 3rd annual Africa Most Influential Persons Awards ceremony held at the M Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. The event was held under the theme “Recognising the People Determining Africa’s Socio-Economic Direction.” Organized by the Accra-based Business Executive Media Group in partnership with the International Business Council Africa and the African Chamber for Trade, the awards celebrate individuals whose extraordinary achievements shape the continent's economic, political, and cultural landscape.

The recognition highlights Dr. Magoola’s immense contributions to healthcare self-sufficiency at a time when the African Union is actively pursuing a target to manufacture at least 60% of its health products locally by 2040.

Speaking after the ceremony in Kigali, Dr. Magoola dedicated the award to his home country and its scientific community, while expressing profound gratitude for the strategic backing his work has received from the highest levels of government.

"We are grateful for this recognition and for the support from everyone, especially His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni," said Dr. Magoola. Founded by Dr. Magoola in 2014, Dei BioPharma is at the absolute forefront of Africa’s biotech revolution. Dr. Magoola’s global scientific footprint includes filing more than 100 patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). His research spans treatments and vaccines for devastating diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's, sickle cell anemia, malaria, tuberculosis, and diabetes.

Key highlights of his recent scientific work include:

• mRNA Cancer Vaccines: The submission of seven new patent applications for a family of mRNA-based cancer vaccines designed to target recurring genetic changes across patient groups globally.

• Veterinary Solutions: A published patent application for a vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease, aimed at protecting East African livestock and saving millions in veterinary import costs.

• Prior International Acclaim: The Kigali award adds to a decorated portfolio, including the Ratna Pharma Award (India, 2025) for vaccine research and Researcher of the Year at the International Molecular Biologist Awards (December 2024).
