Uganda Christian University (UCU) secured a 1-0 victory against Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in the University Football League in Mukono on Thursday evening.
This will be the second final for UCU after their maiden which was played in 2019. The Cardinals will walk with belief going into the final since they have not yet lost a single game in the ongoing campaign.
Thomas Lasu made a timely clearance on the far post to deny Harry Abiti who was waiting to connect with Isaac Ofoyrwoth’s delivery.
Moments later, Abiti forced goalkeeper Innocent Ayebale into a full-stretch save as he palmed away the forward’s low effort.
Ofoyrwoth broke the deadlock with a powerful volleyed strike in the 35th minute as the home crowd erupted in joy.
It was a well-constructed goal that was started by Ivan Mutebi who released Abiti on the right flank, the forward laid in quick delivery and Ofoyrwoth fired it in the bottom corner.
In the 40th minute, MUBS wasted a glorious chance to level matters as Talibu Yokole nodded wide Lasu’s delivery with an empty net in front of him.
Coming back from the break, the visitors looked more motivated throwing several bodies upfront as they looked to return to the game.
Sudhir Bin Saidi’s quick feet troubled the UCU backline as he came close twice but could not curl the ballI the target.
In the 78th minute, Godfrey Arijole made a childish challenge tripping Stuart Magumba at the edge of the box but Yokole’s freekick went inches wide.
Derrick Tenywa had a chance to seal the hosts’ victory after being set up by Abiti but the forward’s touch went straight to Ayebale’s gloves.
At full-time, the Cardinals sealed their spot in the final of the ongoing championship.
They will be playing against Nkumba University or Kampala University who are playing in the other semi-finals’ encounter.
