Thierry Neuville edged his team-mate Ott Tanak to post the fastest time in the Safari Rally opening stage at Karasani on Thursday.

The championship leader fared through the 4.84-kilometre Super Special Stage in 3:19.9 securing a lead of 0.1s.

Knowing Safari Rally too well from the three previous visits, Neuville anticipates challenges to unfold in the coming days.

“It will be a challenging event. Our fingers are crossed that, this time, we can get through without any technical problems or mistakes. I think we are well prepared, and I am feeling good in the car, so it’s always good to start a rally like this,” said the Hyundai driver.

In third position was reigning champion Kalle Rovanperä who was 0.7s behind.

Takamoto Katsuta and Esapekka Lappi completed the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.

In WRC2, Gus Greensmith in a Skoda Fabia took the lead followed by Grégoire Munster and Oliver Solberg in third.

Among the local crews, Carlo Tundo finished the stage in 16th position followed by Karan Patel while Hamza Anwar is in 20th overall.

Uganda’s only representative Yasin Nasser finished the opening stage in 21st position overall.

Kenya’s Samman Singh Vohra had a moment at the super special rolling his Skoda Fabia. However, he managed to limp through the stage to finish 28th overall.

Safari Rally will head back to Naivasha for the rest of the weekend. The event will resume with six stages on Friday.
