Gianna Floyd & Roxie Washington Become Executive Producers

On Wednesday, May 22, Variety reported that Gianna and her mother, Roxie Washington, will serve as executive producers on a biopic about the late George Floyd. ‘George Floyd: Daddy Changed The World’ will be the film’s title.

Additionally, Gregory R. Anderson, who is known for his work on the 2007 film ‘Stomp The Yard,’ will write the screenplay.

In an exclusive statement to Variety, Washington told the outlet that she looks forward to letting the world know the real George.

“We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all,” Washington stated.

George Floyd’s Death Sparked Racial Reckoning

The announcement of Floyd’s film arrived three days before the fourth anniversary of his passing. Floyd unfortunately passed away on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He died while being arrested by police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.

The encounter occurred after Floyd allegedly attempted to use a counterfeit $20 at a convenience store. Floyd repeatedly told Chauvin that he could not breathe while his face was pressed against a concrete road. However, Chauvin seemingly ignored Floyd’s claims. According to Entertainment Weekly, the gut-wrenching moment turned into a viral video that sparked global outrage and fueled a movement against police brutality.

In 2021, Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He was later sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. Three additional officers present at the time, including Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng, were also convicted.
