Brian Aheebwa and Denis Omedi scored in the second half but a naïve start cost them advantage as they lost 3-2 to Libya’s Al Hilal Benghazi at the Martyrs of Benina stadium.

The hosts who also had goalkeeper Crispus Kusiima sent off in the 50th minute conceded inside two minutes to compatriot Muhammad Shaban who headed home a free kick.

Talha Rizik doubled the lead for the Libyan club in the 20th minute as the first half ended with the visitors on top.

Coach Brian Ssenyondo was forced to make a change at 1-0 withdrawing midfielder Marvin Nyanzi for striker Aheebwa.

At the start of the second, Eric Muber replaced Paddy Muhumuza in midfielder but tragedy befell Kitara as Kusiima was sent off for handling outside the area with Shaban forcing the error after getting at the end of a brilliant through ball.

The resultant free kick hit the woodwork before Shaban nodded a rebound into the net from a seemingly onside position but assistant referee’s flag went up to the relief of Kitara.

In the 62nd minute, Aheebwa halved the deficit with a brilliant goal after a mix up between the goalkeeper and defender as they played out of defence with the forward sending a volley into unguarded net.

But the visitors restored their two goal led moments later through captain Elbadry immediately after a foul in the area.

Omedi made sure the tie isn’t complete with a good composed finish in the 82nd minute and the hosts could have tied it but referee waved a genuine penalty away when their appeared to be a hand ball in the area.

The two sides meet again in a week’s time at the same venue with Kitara needing a win of a two goal margin to advance to the next stage where Egypt’s Al Masry is lurking.
