"Love Me Or Hate Me, That’s Your Problem But Besigye Shouldn’t Be Imprisoned Without A Fair Trial," Declares Gen Otafiire

Major General Kahinda Otafiire has publicly demanded justice for opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, insisting that he should not remain jailed without a fair trial. The veteran politician, who serves as Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs, has called on authorities to ensure that Besigye is treated according to the law.

“Hate or like me if you want, I don’t care, but Besigye shouldn’t be jailed without a fair trial,” Gen Otafiire told reporters during a recent press briefing. His statement comes after months of Besigye’s detention on charges that remain unclear to the public.

Otafiire emphasized that justice and the rule of law must prevail, regardless of political affiliations or public opinion. “I don’t mind if you dislike me, but Besigye shouldn’t be jailed without a fair hearing,” he said, reinforcing the principle that every citizen deserves due process.

The Minister questioned why Besigye has been detained for so long without formal evidence being presented in court. He urged the authorities to clarify the charges against him and provide proof, so the public can understand what he is accused of.

Gen Otafiire also highlighted that prolonged detention without trial can undermine public confidence in Uganda’s legal system. “Love me or hate me, that’s your problem, but Besigye should not be imprisoned without a fair trial,” he declared, calling for transparency and accountability.

Observers note that Besigye has been a key opposition figure for many years, challenging the ruling government on several occasions. His detention has drawn criticism from human rights organizations both locally and internationally.

Otafiire’s comments are seen as a strong political statement, signaling concern over fairness and the protection of constitutional rights. He insisted that no one should be above the law, and the legal system must treat all Ugandans equally.

The Minister also reminded the authorities that the Ugandan Constitution guarantees a fair trial for all individuals. He emphasized that failing to uphold these rights could escalate political tensions and damage the country’s democratic image.

Public reaction to Otafiire’s statements has been mixed. Some supporters of Besigye applaud the call for justice, while others question why such comments are only coming now from a government official.

As the debate continues, many are watching closely to see whether authorities will respond to the demands for a fair trial. Otafiire’s remarks serve as a reminder that justice must be impartial, and that political differences should never override the law.
