KIU 31ST Graduation: STEM students shine as over 2,214 graduates.

Kampala International University (KIU) held its 31st Graduation ceremony on Saturday, 26th July 2027, at its western campus in Ishaka, Bushenyi district, with over 2,214 graduates completing their studies in various disciplines.

Among the most notable graduates were students are individuals who pursue academic or career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) whose numbers shot up reaching up to 56% of the total graduates, representing 1,237 graduates.

Also, of the total graduates, 914 were females while 1,300 were males.

Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, who was the Guest of Honor at the ceremony, highlighted KIU has exhibited its excellence in achieving the desires of the education policy in Uganda as a private university.

“KIU is living proof of what Uganda’s liberalized education policy can achieve. Private sector education is working and winning. You are the salt and light of our communities. Go out there and make a difference," he told the graduates

Al-Hajj Hassan Basajjabalaba

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Al-Hajj Hassan Basajjabalaba, said that KIU has made an incredible achievement and a strong contribution to Uganda’s development, including setting up a private medical school, giving out scholarships, training Doctors, among others.

"It was difficult to convince people that we could start a private medical school here, but we did, and we were able to set up the first private medical school in Uganda. In the last 20 years, we have trained about 4,500 doctors. Out of these, 2,500 received bursaries. Among them, 1,500 received 50% bursaries, and 1,000 received full bursaries. Overall, the university has graduated nearly 80,000 students in 20 years.  30,000 of them on bursary and 50,000 self-sponsored,” he said

He told the graduating class that “I remind you that we now live in a competitive, complex, and rapidly evolving world. It is imperative that you carry forth the hopes and aspirations of your nations and embody the promise of a vibrant future”

Prof. Muhamed Ngoma, The KIU Vice Chancellor, said, "Over the years, it is only KIU that graduates the highest number of STEM students in the Country and this is in line with the National Vision 2040."

Meanwhile, Amb. John Shama Shaga, Head of Mission, Nigerian High Commission in Uganda, told the graduates to utilize the values at the university to guide their future always.

“I encourage you to pursue excellence relentlessly and allow the values instilled in you during your time at this great university to guide your journey ahead,” he said

Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, Former KIU University Council Chairperson and Guest Speaker, said that "I am proud to be associated with this institution not just because I come from this area or this country, but because of what this institution has done, creating jobs, building friendships, shaping lives. Some people look better today because of this institution."

The top student in BBA Accounting and Finance Kintu Collins (CGPA 4.81), out of excitement, received a cash prize of UGX 1 Million from CPA Isaac Muzoora from ICPAU who congratulated him, and officially welcomed him to the accountancy profession as a symbolic gift to kickstart his CPA journey.
