Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo has successfully defended his title in the men’s senior race at the 2024 World Cross Country Championships

In the Men’s Senior Race that was held at the Park of Friendship in Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday, Kiplimo ran a time of 28.09 to retain his crown.

It should be noted that Kiplimo won the same race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championship in Bathurst, Australia.

India’s Hemraj Gurjar hit the front right from onset to set the pace but could only last for half a lap before giving way to Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele.

At the end of the first lap, Jacob Kiplimo was in 12th place while Joshua Cheptegei was a distant 21st.

With the heat of the race growing, boys were separated from the men and a field of about 15 ran in one group at the front.

Uganda’s Hosea Kiplangat went into the lead halfway into the third lap before Kenya’s Gideon Kipkertich Rono took over. By this time, Cheptegei and Kiplimo were about 30 metres behind the leader.

The 21-year old Kenyan runner lost the pace going into the final two laps with the chasing field catching up on him.

Cheptegei and Kiplimo then hit the front with about a lap and half to go and when the bell went, the duo were in control.

Kiplimo however, showed grit in the final bend of the race to beat off competition from Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi who settled for second place like it was the case last year.

Kenya’s Benson Kiplangat completed the podium spots, coming third while Cheptegei settled for sixth place.

The other Ugandans in this race settled for 11th (Dan Chibet), 13th (Hosea Kiplangat) and 14th (Martin Magengo Kiprotich).

Uganda has now made this race its own, claiming gold in the previous three events. Cheptegei won in 2019 before Kiplimo claiming the crown last year and now this year.
