The 2024 Entebbe Zone football championship successfully came to a climax on Friday, 22nd March at the lake-side Katabi Gombolola playground in Division A, Entebbe Municipality.
Buwaya based Kasanje High School was the champion of the week-long tournament that lured as many as 25 schools.
Kasanje High School defied all the odds to overcome Entebbe Secondary School 4-2 in post match penalties after normal time had ended goal-less before a capacity crowd.
The victors had a stellar performance right from group stages that witnessed them eject record champions Boston High School Mpala at the semi-final stage.
Boston High School Mpala succumbed 2-4 in post match penalties to a vibrant Kasanje High School after normal time was score-less.
On the other hand, Entebbe Secondary School ejected Kisubi Mapeera 1-0 at the semi-final stage with Latif Mubiru striking home a penalty from 30 yards.
The victors were rewarded with a trophy, gold medals and a certificate of participation.
Entebbe Secondary School was consoled with silver medals and a certificate of participation.
Ronald Ssengabo, captain of Kasanje High School attributed their victory to good preparations and the belief they had.
“We were prepared as a team right from the beginning. I thank my teammates for working hard and beliving that we could make it. I also thank the school management for supporting us” Ssengabo stated.
The games teacher of Kasanje High School Daniel Mukoova who was the coach for the team has no set his target to the Wakiso district qualifiers.
“We came as underdogs and no one believed in us. We are now champions and looking forward representing Entebbe zone to the Wakiso district qualifiers. We are resuming training for that championship” Mukoova revealed.
Chairperson, Entebbe zone football Joseph Ddamulira Kawuma lauded all the different participating schools, organizing committee, school management committees, games teachers, students and referees for the collective effort to have a successful tournament.
Ddamulira, also the chairperson of Busiro ssaza football team made a humble plea to Government to help in upgrading the sports facilities in the country.
I thank every stakeholder who had a hand in organizing this championship to become a success. From the different schools that participated, the organizing committee, school management committees, games teachers, students and referees, thank you for the work well done. Champions Kasanje High School and Entebbe Secondary School will represent Entebbe zone at the Wakiso district qualifiers.
Twenty five schools were engaged in this tournament played through group phases, knock-outs to the finals.
