"How Can You Keep Besigye In Luzira For Over 8 Months & Keep Insisting That He Is Guilty? Tell The World What He Did," Gen Otafiire Questions

Ugandan political veteran Major General Kahinda Otafiire has publicly criticized the prolonged detention of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, who has been held in Luzira Prison for over eight months.
Speaking passionately, Gen Otafiire questioned the fairness of keeping Besigye jailed while authorities repeatedly insist he is guilty, yet fail to provide clear evidence of his alleged offenses.
“It’s not right to keep Besigye jailed for over eight months and just keep saying he is guilty. Then reveal to us what he did,” Otafiire stated, emphasizing the need for transparency in the legal process.
He expressed frustration at what he called a lack of accountability, urging the government to provide clear details about the charges Besigye faces. “How can you keep Besigye in Luzira for over eight months and keep insisting that he is guilty? Tell the world what he did,” he demanded.
Gen Otafiire’s statements come amid growing concerns from civil society and political observers over the prolonged detention of opposition leaders without clear evidence or trial.
He stressed that the justice system must be fair and impartial, and that no individual, regardless of their political standing, should be held without a transparent legal process.
Otafiire highlighted that prolonged detention without evidence undermines public confidence in Uganda’s judicial institutions and could be perceived as political victimization.
He called on the authorities to either present credible charges against Besigye or release him immediately, arguing that justice delayed is justice denied.
Political analysts say that Gen Otafiire’s intervention could reignite debates about human rights, rule of law, and political freedoms in Uganda. Many see his bold criticism as a reminder that even senior government officials are concerned about fairness in handling opposition figures.
In closing, Gen Otafiire appealed to all parties to respect the principles of justice and transparency, warning that prolonged detentions without accountability could harm Uganda’s political stability and international image.
