With uncertainty surrounding the readiness of Mandela National stadium, Namboole for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, all hope is not lost according to Fufa President Moses Magogo.

Uganda is slated to host Botswana and Algeria in June but as per reports, Namboole isn’t ready to host any standard international matches as construction works are still ongoing.

Magogo confirmed Namboole works having slowed down and still missing components to make it FIFA standard.

“I want to be clear that work is ongoing at Namboole but had slowed down a bit lately and some things are still missing,” said Magogo. “I understand there were some financial challenges having received only Ugx 80bn out of the Ugx 97bn.

“Some of the missing things have already been procured, some not yet, some cannot be changed but need confirmation in 60 days before the game.”

However, Fufa is expected to make a communication in regards to where they will host the two matches with Namboole still an option.

“Not all hope is lost though because there are still high-level discussions going on between CAF, Government and FUFA that’s why the federation is yet to come out with any official communication. In 2 or 3 days we shall have a direction.”

Uganda hasn’t hosted a home game at CAF/FIFA standard in recent years with Cranes hosting games in Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon in the 2023 Afcon qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Shadow Sports Minister Geoffrey Kayemba Solo insists Namboole won’t be ready for June matches.
