India is known as the largest banana producer in the world, accounting for 17.8 per cent of the share. There are also various types of Banana cultivation in India, including Robusta, Dwarf Cavendish, Rasthali, Poovan, and many more, listed below.
Popular varieties of bananas in India
Robusta is a medium-sized banana, dark green in colour on out outside and bright yellow on the inside. This banana is grown in the southern part of India.
Dwarf Cavendish grows in West Bengal, Bihar and some places in South India. It produces a bunch of around 15 to 25 kg. It has a green colour on the outside and the same on the inside. This type of banana is used for making chips, bread, and pudding.
Rasthali has grown to a medium size, similar to the usual banana size, and is also cultivated in South India.
Red Banana is found in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, also known as Lal Velchi. This banana has similarities to raspberries and mangoes when fully ripe.
