"Bobi Wine Can't Join the Peaceful Transfer of Power; His Politics Is Toxic, Ugandans Shouldn’t Entrust Him With Presidency’ Norbert Mao Declares

Justice Minister Norbert Mao has sparked nationwide debate with his comments about Uganda’s political future. Speaking recently, Mao said that Bobi Wine and his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), cannot be trusted with power. He described their politics as “toxic” and “poisonous,” making them unsuitable to participate in a planned peaceful transfer of power from President Yoweri Museveni.

According to Mao, the transfer of power is already being discussed among major political parties in secret meetings, which he referred to as happening in “special rooms.” He emphasized that this process will not be decided by voting or ballots, as many Ugandans might expect.

He listed the political parties reportedly involved in these discussions, including the Democratic Party, Democratic Front of Mpuuga, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), FDC, JEEMA, the PLU of Gen. Muhoozi, and the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC). Mao said these groups are working together to choose a new leader who will take over from Museveni.

Mao explained that the NUP and Bobi Wine are excluded from these talks due to what he called “toxic politics.” He argued that the NUP’s approach is divisive and cannot be trusted with the responsibility of national leadership.

“The transition will not be decided by the ballot as you think,” Mao said. “Talks are going on in special rooms.” His statement has shocked opposition supporters and left many questioning the democratic process in Uganda.

He further added that Museveni himself is involved in these discussions. “Museveni will peacefully leave power for another leader without having elections,” Mao said, highlighting the importance of stability and continuity in governance.

Mao’s revelations have sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of the NUP criticized the exclusion of Bobi Wine, while others argued that behind-the-scenes negotiations are necessary for a smooth transfer of power.

Political analysts note that such negotiations have historically played a role in Uganda’s leadership transitions. However, Mao’s openness about the process is unusual and has intensified public discussion about transparency and democracy.

Despite the controversy, Mao defended the talks, stating that their goal is to prevent political unrest and ensure a peaceful handover of power. “We are working behind the scenes to make sure power changes hands smoothly,” he said.

As Uganda looks toward the next political chapter, Mao’s statements underline the complex balance between formal elections and informal political negotiations. Citizens and political observers are now closely watching the developments to see how the “special room” talks will shape the nation’s future.
