Africa has been chosen to host World Rugby’s inaugural ‘Impact Beyond’ Summit from October 3-5 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is the first of six regional summits designed to boost women’s rugby globally while empowering member unions with practical initiatives.

Representatives from six African member unions from South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe are attending this summit at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport.

The unions have also nominated two female delegates as ‘Impact Champions’. These delegates will receive mentorships and coaching from the United Kingdom’s trusted high-performance experts, and an exclusive opportunity to attend the 2025 women’s Rugby World Cup in England.

Uganda Rugby Union (URU) nominated Winnie Atyang and Prossy Nakakande for the summit. Both Atyang and Nakakande are former Uganda Lady Rugby Cranes internationals and featured at the 2009 women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai, UAE.

Now well in post-playing days, Nakakande serves as the women’s representative on URU’s Executive Committee and is the former Uganda Women’s 7s team manager. Atyang hung up her boots last year and is the new Uganda Women’s 7s team manager.

Full Ugandan delegation at the 2024 summit:

  1. Prossy Peace Nakakande – URU Executive Committee Women’s Representative
  2. Winne Atyang – Uganda Women’s 7s Team Manager & URU-Rugby Africa Sports Management Training Program Scholar
  3. Jude Rwakayanga – URU Technical Committee Member
  4. Isaac Lutwama Nsubuga – URU CEO

The summit is a key component of World Rugby’s global impact plan to create a platform for dialogue and action on critical gender-based topics. Attendees will explore themes such as gender equity and equality in rugby, pathways for girls and women in the sport, and innovative fundraising strategies.

Uganda is one of the leaders in providing equal opportunities for girls and women in rugby. There are regular age-grade and senior competitions and active national teams through which girls and women participate in rugby all year round.
