What is The Oil Surge Relay?

 

An oil surge relay is a protective device that detects rapid flows of transformer oil as a result of internal short-circuits, insulation failures and winding faults. Oil surge relays are usually mounted between the transformer tank and its conservator (gas tank for the transformer), typically in switching compartments where OLTC are installed.

There is an abrupt change in oil flow when there is a fault. The oil surge relay detects this unusual condition and immediately activates an alarm or tripping contacts, which isolates the transformer to minimize the risk of additional damages.

Due to its rapid response time, the oil surge relay is very effective at preventing catastrophic transformer failures.
