Fresh from winning three medals at the 13th African Games in Accra city, Ghana; Uganda’s weight-lifter Davis Niyoyita is eyeing a brave performance at the 2024 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup in Phuket city of Thailand.

Niyiyota will be joined by a female weightlifter Lydia Nakidde who also competed at the recently concluded African Games.

These two athletes will be joined by their head coach Khasimu Nsubuga and the president of the Uganda Weightlifting Federation (UWF) Hajji Salim Musoke.

Backing on the stellar performance from the 13th African Games, Niyoyita who bagged two silver and one bronze in the 55 kg category had set his eyes to the gold at the global stage.

“There was virtually no time to rest after the 2024 African Games in Ghana. I remained training to prepare for the World Cup in Thailand” the Kakungulu Memorial S4 student told Kawowo Sports.

Niyoyita won 2 silvers in the clean and jerk as well as 1 bronze in the snatch competition under the 55 kg category during the African Games in Accra city, Ghana.

After his events, he remained practicing while in Ghana as the rest of the participants were in competition.

Although she finished outside the medal bracket, Nakidde staged a gallant performance amid a bout of malaria finishing fourth overall in the 87 kg category of clean & jerk as well as snatch.

The 2024 IWF world cup in Thailand will be the final event as athletes seek qualification points to the prestigious Olympic Games in Paris city, France.
