"We Consider Besigye Innocent Until You Tell Us The Crime He Committed & Show the Evidence," Gen Otafiire Insists

Major General Kahinda Otafiire, Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs, has publicly questioned the prolonged detention of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, calling for clarity on the reasons behind his imprisonment.
Speaking to reporters, Gen Otafiire emphasized that in the eyes of many Ugandans, Besigye remains innocent until the authorities reveal the alleged offenses he committed.
“For us, in our eyes, Besigye remains innocent until you tell us what he has done,” Gen Otafiire stated firmly, highlighting the frustration felt by citizens over the lack of transparency.
He expressed concern over the fact that Besigye has been detained for over eight months without any formal explanation or evidence presented to the public.
“It is not right to keep him jailed for this long and just insist that he is guilty. The people deserve to know what he is accused of,” Gen Otafiire added, stressing the importance of due process and accountability.
The veteran politician also criticized the government for what he described as vague statements about Besigye’s alleged wrongdoing, saying such secrecy undermines trust in the justice system.
Gen Otafiire reminded authorities that the rule of law requires clear evidence before declaring any citizen guilty. He insisted that detaining someone without explanation erodes public confidence in both the legal and political systems.
He further urged that if there is evidence against Besigye, it should be presented promptly and transparently, allowing both the public and the legal system to judge the case fairly.
The minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns from civil society and human rights groups, who have repeatedly called for clarity on Besigye’s detention and adherence to legal procedures.
Gen Otafiire concluded by reiterating that until the authorities provide concrete evidence, Besigye must be regarded as innocent, and justice must follow transparent, accountable procedures.
