The Ukraine Solidarity Committee Uganda (USCU) stands united with other stakeholders in condemnation of Russia’s military aggression toward Ukraine in gross violation of international law and UN Charter amounting to war crimes.

UCSU members have also condemned the neutrality of other UN member states whose stance was not shown at the recent UN decision vote cast.

“We want to challenge neutral UN member states that their stance in the matter of Vladimir Putin’s reckless action is highly significant to preserve the independence of Ukraine” the statement partly reads.

The Mugerwa Taata Nantongo, The Action Team Leader, USCU during a press briefing said that urged international bodies to also focus on procedural and mutual collaboration as a countermeasure against a possible forthcoming famine in Ukraine.

He also urged the Uganda government to actualize democratic values by ending contracts with Russia while applauding US envoy’s visit to Uganda following Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“We are grateful for you following the visit of Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and fondly think that you will consolidate our steps and democratic attempts undertaken in favor of peace in Ukraine”

Recently Civil Society Organizations globally recognized the plenty of voices of conscience within Russia who oppose Putin’s war on Ukraine and deplored the attacks on civil society, the independent media, the political opposition, and others expressing democratic dissent by Putin’s extreme nationalist regime.

They urged the international community to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and double peace efforts.

“We believe the people of Ukraine have the sovereign right to live in peace and determine their own future. We urge members of the international community to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and demand accountability for the commission of violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. We call for a redoubling of peace efforts to bring an end to the conflict to enable the Ukrainian people to resume their lives in peace” the joint statement partly read.

The Russo-Ukrainian War is an ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. It was started by Russia in February 2014 following the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity, and initially focused on the status of Crimea and the Donbas, internationally recognized as part of Ukraine.

Uganda was among 17 African nations that abstained in a March vote on a United Nations resolution condemning the Russian invasion, which was supported by 141 countries out of 193.

During the visit of the Russian minister to Uganda and Africa, Lavrov praised what he described as "the responsible and balanced position taken by Uganda and other African states", accusing the West of displaying a colonial mindset by demanding that Africa adopt an anti-Russian stance.

This chimed with Museveni's remarks, in which he drew heavily on historical events to explain his preference for staying on good terms with both Russia and the West.
