The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) has officially launched the road map to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France, inside the last 100 days.
This ceremony took place at the Copper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo, Kampala city on Thursday, 18th April 2024.
The guest list was very rich and enticing with politicians, sports leaders, athletes’ representative, sponsors, partners and the media.
French Ambassador to Uganda H.E Xavier Sticker; Uganda’s Ambassador to France H.E Dorren Ruth Amule, State minister of sports Hon Peter Ogwang, UOC president Dr Donald Rukare, National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports Dr. Canon Duncans Mugumya, presidential advisor Guntar Lungar Okello, Chef De Mission Moses Mwase, representatives of partners as Uganda Tourism Board, Plascon and Sanlam Insurance among others attended.
H.E Sticker tagged the Olympics as a moment of fostering unity, legacy and celebrating memories.
The Ambassador expressed France’ readiness to host the entire world, a special occasion since the country hosted the games in 1924.
“France is ready, committed and proud to host the Olympic Games. The French people will warmly welcome you as we promote the Olympic Solidarity. Seeing the games return to France after 100 years is humbling. These will be games of unity, legacy and memories” H.E Sticker remarked.
Hon. Ogwang noted that this will be Uganda’s 17th appearence at the games as the country eyes more positive performances.
“We shall be in France to compete than merely participate. We have a target of improving our performance than the one in Tokyo, Japan” Hon. Ogwang noted.
At the last games in Japan, Uganda won a total of four medals.
Hinting about the preparations and road map for team Uganda, Chef De Mission Mwase saluted the already qualified athletes, with high hopes for those yet to qualify.
“Today, we are launching the 100 days to the Olympic Games. Team Uganda is ready and on the journey to good preparations. As of now, we have 21 athletes already qualified. We expect more in badminton and boxing with some wild card invitations. We call upon partners to come on board and support team Uganda” Mwase noted.
Dr Donald Rukare, president of Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) expressed appreciation for the gratitude of the ambassadors to be part of the ceremony, the minister as well as the partners.
Rukare is optimistic about team Uganda’s preparations and urged more partners to come on board and support.
Athletes’ representative Ganzi Mugula used the opportunity to caution the athletes about thorough concentration whilst preparing for the games inside the last 100 days.
Mugula called for more mental building and strength at this final bend of the preparatory stage.
Partners as Plascon, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Sanlam Insurance have already joined the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) and National Council of Sports (NCS) to assist in the decent preparations.
So far, Uganda has qualified athletes for Cycling, Athletics, Rowing and Swimming.
The games will start on 26th July 2024 and end by 12th September 2024.
