But the entry rules have changed this year in ways that catch even experienced Thailand travellers off guard. The 60-day visa-free window that launched in 2024 is being rolled back. A new mandatory digital arrival card applies to every single passenger — visa or not. And the Thai embassy in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai no longer accepts walk-in visa applications at all.

First: Do You Even Need a Visa?

Before anything else — check your passport, not your UAE residency. Thailand's entry rules are based entirely on nationality.

No Visa Required

If you hold one of the following passports, you can enter Thailand without any advance application. Entry is stamped at the airport.

UAE (Emirati) nationals are visa-exempt for up to 30 days per visit under a standing bilateral arrangement that is unaffected by the 2026 rule changes.

Western passport holders — UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, EU member states, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore — are also visa-exempt. Following Thailand's Cabinet decision of 19 May 2026, the permitted stay for most of these nationalities is reverting from 60 days back to 30 days. This change takes effect 15 days after formal publication in Thailand's Royal Gazette, which had not yet occurred at the time of writing. Until then, travellers entering on the 60-day window keep their full allowance.

Once inside Thailand on a visa-exempt entry, you can extend your stay by 30 days at any Thai immigration office, bringing the potential total to 60 days. Fee: approximately THB 1,900 (around AED 210).

Also visa-exempt: Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Indonesia, and around 60 other nationalities. Check the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the full current list before travelling.

Visa on Arrival (15 Days)

A limited number of nationalities qualify for a Visa on Arrival at major Thai airports, valid for 15 days only. This is a small, separate category — don't assume you qualify. Verify your specific nationality on the MFA Thailand website.

Tourist Visa Required — Apply Online Before You Fly

The following nationalities — among the most common in the UAE expat community — must apply for a Thailand Tourist Visa before travelling:

• Indian nationals

• Pakistani nationals

• Bangladeshi nationals

• Sri Lankan nationals

• Nepali nationals

• Many African and other South Asian nationalities

Important change since January 2025: The Royal Thai Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate-General in Dubai no longer accept walk-in visa applications. All UAE-based applicants must apply online through Thailand's official e-Visa portal at thaievisa.go.th. This applies without exception. 

How to Apply for the Thai Tourist Visa from Dubai

The entire process is completed online in 20-30 minutes, and your visa is delivered as a PDF to your email address within 2-5 business days.

Step 1 — Go to the Official Portal

Only apply at thaievisa.go.th, the official platform of the Royal Thai Government. Third-party websites exist, however they charge excessive service fees. The government portal is always the lowest-cost, most direct route.

Step 2 — Create an Account

Sign up with your email address and create a profile. Choose the United Arab Emirates as your current country of residence and your nationality as your passport country.

Step 3 — Choose Your Visa Type

Tourist Visa — Single Entry (TR)

Stay: up to 60 days

Validity: 3 months from issue (must enter Thailand within 3 months of approval)

Tourist Visa — Multiple Entry (MTRE)

Stay: up to 60 days per visit

Validity: 6 months from issue, unlimited re-entries

Most UAE residents who apply for a standard vacation pick the Single Entry Tourist Visa. The Multiple Entry version is best suited for frequent travelers or those who plan two or more trips to Thailand within six months.

Step 4 — Upload Your Documents

Prepare the following before starting your application:

Documents must be uploaded as clear scans or high-resolution photographs — blurry images are a leading cause of avoidable delays.

Step 5 — Pay and Track

Pay by credit or debit card directly on the portal. You'll receive a confirmation email with your application reference number. Standard processing: 2–4 working days. No express option is currently available for the Thai eVisa. Apply at least 7–10 days before your travel date to leave a reasonable buffer.

Step 6 — Print and Carry Your eVisa

Your confirmed visa will be in PDF format. Make at least two copies to keep with your passport. The eVisa is an independent document that will not be stamped in your passport until it is processed by Thai immigration upon arrival. Present your passport and printed digital visa to the immigration officer. 

TDAC: The One Step Nobody Told You About

This is the most significant change to Thailand's admissions criteria in 2026 — and the most usually missed.

Every traveller entering Thailand — visa or no visa, visa-free or Tourist Visa — must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before boarding their flight. The TDAC replaced the old paper TM6 arrival card in 2025 and is now a mandatory online pre-registration linked to your passport.

The TDAC is free, takes around 10 minutes to complete, and must be done before check-in — not at the airport on arrival. Airlines can and do deny boarding to passengers without a completed TDAC. Complete it via Thailand's official immigration portal as part of your pre-departure checklist, alongside online check-in. 

Flights from Dubai to Thailand—What's Flying and What It Costs

Thailand is one of Dubai's most popular overseas destinations, with various carriers offering nonstop flights to Bangkok, Phuket, and Don Mueang.

Dubai to Bangkok (BKK—Suvarnabhumi Airport)

This is the busiest and most affordable route.

Emirates dominates with 35 nonstop flights per week from DXB, flying daily across numerous departure slots using both A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Flight time: approximately 6 hours 25–40 minutes.

flydubai operates nonstop flights from DXB to both Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) on selected days of the week.

Air Arabia (from Sharjah, SHJ) operates 17 nonstop flights per week — a practical option for residents of Sharjah, Ajman, and northern Dubai.

Connecting options: Qatar Airways (via Doha), Air India, Gulf Air, and others serve the route with one stop, often at lower fares.

Cheapest month to fly Dubai–Bangkok: September. Cheapest booking window: approximately 6 weeks in advance. December and January fares are the highest — book at least 10–12 weeks ahead for peak holiday travel.

Dubai to Phuket (HKT)

Emirates operates daily DXB–HKT flights, some nonstop and some routed via Bangkok. Flight time: approximately 6 hours 30 minutes nonstop. Thai Airways and connecting Asian carriers also serve the route.

Dubai to Koh Samui and Chiang Mai

Both destinations require a domestic connection inside Thailand. Bangkok is the usual transfer hub for both — Bangkok Airways has a near-monopoly on Koh Samui connections, while AirAsia and Thai Airways serve Chiang Mai. 

When to Book

For the best fares, book 2–4 months in advance for peak season travel (November to February) and 4–8 weeks ahead for the shoulder season (March–May). Travelling during the low season (June–October) often means significantly cheaper flights, though some areas experience heavy rainfall.

Tip: Use flight comparison tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Kayak and set price alerts for your preferred route. Flying midweek is often cheaper than on weekends.
