Rovanpera tops Safari rally shakedown 


Reigning world rally champion Kalle Rovanpera in a toyota GR Yaris topped the Safari rally Kenya shakedown with the fastest run through. 

The 2022 safari rally winner who is taking on his second event off his part-time season recorded a time of 3 minutes, 32seconds to set the fastest run.

The Finnish, however is not taken up by the performance ahead of the weekend contest. 

“This is a rally where you normally don’t expect too much before the weekend because you never know what’s going to happen,” says Rovanpera. 

The current championship leader, Thierry Neuville in the Hyundai i20 missed out on the lead by two tenth of second.

Esapekka Lappi, another Hyundai driver finished in third with 0.1s behind his teammate. Followed Elfyn Evans and Ott Tanak completing the fourth and fifth respectively. 

In WRC2, Gus Greensmith in a Skoda Fabia topped the category with 1.2seconds quicker than teammate Oliver Solberg who survived an incident when he overshoot a junction. Kajetan Kajetanowicz finished in third. 

Karan Patel comes are the best placed local in the shakedown run finishing in 15th followed by Carl Tundo in eighteenth.

Safari rally proper officially starts tomorrow with a ceremonial start at the Kenya international convention center(KICC).

Crews will head to Kasarani for the super special stage.
