NWSC Reveals A Customer Base Surge of Over 1.46 Million As Network Expands To 25,000 Kms
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has achieved a major milestone in its service expansion drive, with its customer base growing to 1.46 million* and its pipe network extending to over 25,000 kilometres.
The growth represents one of the fastest expansions in the Corporation’s history, up from 23 towns five years ago to over 240 towns of operation today.
The development comes as the utility scales up investments to meet growing urban demand and to also prepare for the AFCON 2027 in various of the country’s infrastructure needs.
Under its 2025-2030 Strategic Plan*l themed _“Water for All for Health and Prosperity”, NWSC targets to serve 26 million Ugandans by 2030, reduce non-revenue water from 34% to 28%, and grow turnover to UGX 768 Billionm
Speaking at a recent engagement, NWSC Managing Director Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha said the Corporation is focusing on closing the distribution gap to fully utilize its major production facilities, including the Katosi Water Treatment Plant (160 million litres per day).
To address supply gaps in Greater Kampala, NWSC is implementing Package 2B, a 71-kilometre transmission project with three new reservoirs and booster stations at Kungu, Kabulengwa, and Kanyanya (10 million litres). The project will serve an additional 1 million people in Kira, Kasangati, Gayaza, Bulindo, Kanyanya, Matugga and Nansana by July 2027.
Meanwhile, the Corporation has handed over new projects to boost rural water access, including the recently commissioned Shs10 billion solar-powered Sembabule Water Project, which will benefit 62,049 households in over 50 villages across Lugusulu, Mitima and Mijwala.
In line with its financial sustainability drive, NWSC has also rolled out a stricter digital disconnection policy, replacing paper notices with SMS alerts and enforcing meter removal for defaulters to mobilize internal revenue for further expansion.
NWSC is also strengthening partnerships to fund its UGX 8.2 trillion investment plan, with support from the *Government of France* for expansion to 35 towns.
The Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Eng. Silver Mugisha, has highlighted the Corporation’s significant growth over the past decade, attributing the progress to increased investment, improved efficiency, digitalisation and stronger internal capacity.
Eng. Mugisha said that NWSC’s assets under management have grown from about Shs580 billion to approximately Shs5 trillion, while its service footprint has expanded from 23 to about 290 towns. The population served has similarly increased from about 4.5 million to 22 million Ugandans.
