New poll: Republicans say Trump's an even better candidate now than in 2020

A new Civiqs poll for Daily Kos shows that Republicans believe that “Trump 2: The Retribution” would be one of those rare sequels that improves on the original. They not only consider Trump a better candidate in 2024—Jan. 6 baggage and all—than he was the last time around, but they are even more certain that his “I am your retribution” return is exactly what they want. When asked the question “Thinking back to the 2020 election, do you think Donald Trump today is…” both an overwhelming percentage of Democrats (87%) and a plurality of independents (43%) say that the latest version of Trump is an even worse candidate than in the previous cycle. When it comes to how Trump might handle the nation if given a second chance, independents are evenly split, with 41% thinking that Trump would do better given another try and 42% feeling it would be worse. Considering that Trump’s first term included a pandemic that ultimately resulted in the deaths of over a million Americans, it’s not hard to see how someone might think he couldn’t be that bad a second time. Even so, Democrats are convinced it’s possible, with 93% saying that any Trump sequel would suck.  But Republicans are absolutely stoked for Trump’s return.  Not only do 65% of Republicans think that Trump is a better candidate in 2024, a staggering 78% believe that another four years of Trump would be better than the first. There are no details about what has Republicans so excited, so it’s impossible to say if they’re looking forward to more tax breaks for billionaires, a nationwide abortion ban, or endless show trials for political opponents.  Republicans are less enthusiastic about turning Trump into an ongoing series. While 89% of Democrats and 43% of independents believe it's (a combination of very and somewhat) likely that if Trump gets the chance, he will drive his golf cart straight over the 22nd Amendment and make a bid to remain in office again, only 18% of Republicans find this likely. But if Trump did find a way to stay indefinitely, just under a quarter of Republicans (24%) say that this would be a good thing. Unsurprisingly, neither Democrats nor independents are excited about a third round of Trump: 98% of Democrats and 70% of independents say that Trump trying to hold onto office beyond a second term would be “a bad thing for the United States.” At least a plurality of Republicans (47%) say they don’t want to see a third Trump term. But give them time. After all, they got used to Trump. They got used to supporting insurrection and denying the outcome of elections. It shouldn’t take them long to embrace the idea of a dictator for life. RELATED STORIES: The GOP isn't afraid to back Trump. Why are Democrats afraid to go after him?
