While both terms are associated with the refreshing, relatively pleasant feeling people have after finishing their food, they refer to different products and preparations. Mukhwas is a term mostly used in Indian culture after eating. It usually consists of a mixture of fennel seeds, sesame seeds, anise, coriander, dried fruits, various other spices and additives. Mouth freshener, on the other hand, is a more general term that would refer to mukhwas as well as other products such as mints, chewing gum and sprays.

Mukhwas is a product that is characterized by the standard combination of various ingredients that is common for Indian cuisine like seeds, herbs, spices and other dried components. Mukhwas can be prepared using fennel.

The term mukhwash refers to a mouth freshening preparation which is taken after meals, different varieties may have sweet, spicy, tangy, herbal or aromatic tastes. Some of them could be simple preparations based on one type of seed, while other mukhwases use numerous ingredients which help to create their unique flavor and texture. 

Due to the presence of various types, mukhwas do not have to adhere to a particular flavor or recipe. 

What is a Mouth Freshener?

Mouth freshener is a more general term for products aimed at leaving mouth fresh.  Below are some examples of mouth fresheners:
