Local Gov’t Leaders receive over 196 Vehicles to support service delivery.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has fulfilled his pledge to strengthen local governance by delivering 196 brand new vehicles worth UGX 35.2 billion to Local Government leaders across the country. 

The Ministry of Local government handed over the vehicles on Friday 31st October 2025 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds to 135 District Chairpersons, 10 City and Division Mayors, and 31 Municipal Leaders.

The handover process started with District Chairpersons, then City Mayors, Municipality Mayors and finally Division Mayors.

Some of  Division Mayors including Joy Okello from Lira,  who had expressed disatisfaction for being delayed finaly drove away with their vehicles. 

According to the ministry, 183 Vehicles were handed over on Friday and the remaining 13 Vehicles will be handed over in a Week's time making a total of 196 vehicles.

This initiative is aimed at enhancing the supervision and monitoring of key Government programmes such as the Road Fund, Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Regional Development Programme (RDP), Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), and other initiatives that promote local economic growth and effective service delivery.

Representing the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, applauded the leaders for their resilience and dedication to advancing Government programmes.

 He urged them to prioritize transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the use of the vehicles, emphasizing that they should serve as tools to bring services closer to the people.

Hon. Magyezi also directed that old vehicles previously used by the District Chairpersons and Mayors be handed over to the respective Speakers of Districts, Cities, and Municipalities to strengthen council operations.

“As a supplementary budget, the government purchased vehicles valued at 32.2 Billion shillings to support service delivery. I thank the associations of ULGA and UAC for the spirit to fight for there members” he said

The Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ben Kumumanya, called on the leaders to put the vehicles to proper use by actively supervising Government projects, mobilizing local revenue, and ensuring that development interventions deliver tangible results for communities.

The Vice President of the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) Ibrahim Kittata from Lwengo district while applauding the president for fulfilling his pledge for the vehicles said that the association has been key in following up and securing the vehicles. He said the vehicles will enhance service delivery in the local governments. 

The representative from Toyota by CFAO Sophia Kanyago said that the vehicles supplied are versatile and friendly to use with a warrant of 2 years free service of at the regional service centers in Uganda.

“You don’t have to come to Kampala to service your car, we have service centers in all the regions of the country, with free service of 2 years or 50,000kms ” she said.

The District Chairperson of Masindi district Cosmas Byaruhanda applauded the president, the local government minister and the permanent secretary for following up the presidential pledge re-affirmed his commitment to monitor government programs in the district.  

“Today we have received the long awaited President pledge. We have received the vehicles that will support while monitoring government programs. Iam grateful to the president, the Minister local government and the permanent secretary for following up the pledge. We want to assure the people that we are going to enhance monitoring programs such PFM, Emyooga and others” he said during an interview at Kololo.
