Khelosuper Spotlight: Shami Speaks on Ranji Pitch Issues

Mohammed Shami made an impressive start to the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season and had no qualms about having an opinion. The old pacer, after picking four wickets off Delhi for Bengal, explained the condition of the pitch, fit-critics and one of his former team-mates' memories of India. What happened, what he said, and why the story's important to all competition buffs, including Khelosuper fans.

Shami's Four-Wicket Haul for Bengal

Bengal opened their first-round series against Delhi on Sunday, October 11 in Kalyani, West Bengal at the Bengal Cricket Academy Ground. On the first day, Delhi were bowled out for 240 in 77.3 overs with Shami leading the way for the bowlers with a usual accuracy.

Figures and Key Moments

• Shami took 4 wickets for 30 runs in 17.3 overs, including nine maidens.

• He dismissed Yash Dhull for 9 and ended the innings by removing Shokeen.

• Aamir Gani supported him with three wickets for Bengal.

What Shami Said About the Pitch

After the day's play, Shami said the surface was on the slower side. He felt Bengal's bowling group deserved a more helpful wicket, saying that "No team has this kind of pace bowling." His frustration was clear: with several quality fast bowlers in the squad, he believed a livelier pitch would suit Bengal better.

Why Pitch Quality Matters

Surface preparation shapes the quality of domestic cricket. A slow pitch can neutralise a strong pace attack and make wickets harder to earn. For bowlers preparing for Test cricket, a surface with carry and movement offers better practice. Bengal's pace group also includes Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar and Ishan Porel, so the quality of the attack is well documented.

Red-Ball Preparation Before New Zealand

Many India players are using the opening rounds as red-ball preparation before the two-Test series in New Zealand. That context explains why conditions and workloads in these matches are being watched so closely.

Shami's Reply to Fitness Critics

Shami also replied to remarks pertaining to his rhythm and fitness. However, he does not take offense to such comments, pointing out that he is playing wherever he can on the field. He said in his calm and straight message that working on the pitch is his solution.

Words for Bhuvneshwar Kumar

He also commented on the recent inclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the T20I team, feeling the swing bowler should have been included much before. It's from a fellow vet that knows the journey home and how long it can take.

Shami's Recent Ranji Record

Shami's history in the competition is impressive. In the 2025-26 season, he took 5 for 38 at Eden Gardens as Bengal beat Gujarat by 144 runs, and he had 15 wickets at an average of 10.46 after four innings. He was part of India's 2025 Champions Trophy-winning squad and has argued that playing four-day cricket shows he is fit enough for the 50-over format too.

From Sahaspur to Bengal's Pace Spearhead

Shami's tale is one of perseverance. He hails from Sahaspur (UP) and lived in Kolkata to increase his chance of selection. He impressed in the Eden Gardens nets and was recommended to the state selectors by Sourav Ganguly and joined the Bengal team for 2010-11 season. Later, he also became the leading wicket taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 wickets in seven matches.
