Kayanja Trial: Ssentongo Challenges Audio Evidence as Cross-Examination Continues

KAMPALA — Proceedings in the ongoing trial involving Pastor Robert Kayanja took another dramatic turn after witness Reagan Ssentongo challenged the authenticity of an audio recording presented by the prosecution during cross-examination at the Mwanga II Court.

Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya played the audio recording in an effort to challenge Ssentongo’s testimony and to support the prosecution’s case.

Responding before the court, Ssentongo disputed the prosecution’s assertions and challenged the State to identify the portion of the recording it claimed contained his voice.

“I challenge you to play your audio. When it comes to what you claim to be my voice, then pause and tell me, ‘This is you,'” Ssentongo told the court.

Following the exchange, the prosecution moved on to another line of questioning. The significance and evidential value of the audio recording will ultimately be determined by the court.

During the same hearing, Ssentongo also testified that he and others had been coached to give false testimonies while appearing before Pastor Kayanja’s congregation.

He alleged they were instructed to present themselves as former street children during services, including the church’s “77 Days of Glory” programme, where the testimonies were broadcast to congregants and wider audiences through television and social media.

Those allegations were made by Ssentongo under oath during cross-examination and remain contested. They have not been determined by the court, and Pastor Kayanja has the opportunity to respond to or challenge them through the judicial process.

The trial continues before the Mwanga II Court, where both the prosecution and defence are expected to present further evidence and submissions before the court reaches its determination.
