Impis and Warriors will be relegated after the conclusion of the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series.
Their fate has been sealed on Day One of the series finale during the Rujumba 7s at Kings Park.
They are currently last and second-last on the twelve-team overall standings respectively and needed, as a bare minimum, to reach the Cup Final on Day Two to survive the drop.
Section 1.2.1 of the tournament manual states that “the 11th and 12th placed core teams (Men) at the completion of the 2024 Series will be relegated.”
Elgon Wolves, the team in tenth place, is eleven and twenty-one points above Warriors and Impis respectively.
All the three teams will be in the Challenge Cup on Day Two of the Rujumba 7s, which means that neither Warriors nor Impis will accumulate enough points to leapfrog Elgon Wolves in the overall standings.
Elgon Wolves have done a surprisingly outstanding job in their first-ever season as a core side. For the first three rounds in Entebbe, Mbale and Kyadondo, they were eleventh. Then they reached back-to-back Cup Quarterfinals in Gulu (sixth) and Bugembe (eighth) before backsliding to tenth in Mbarara last week.
Warriors, in their typical fashion, have blown hot and cold. They shot up as high as sixth in Mbale but also dropped as low as thirteenth in Entebbe, Kyadondo, and Bugembe.
Impis have taken the wooden spoon in all rounds, except Kyadondo as their 2023-24 season progressively went from bad to worse. This is their second relegation of the season, having faced the drop in the XVs championship too.
The qualification tournament for the 2025 series to determine which teams will replace Warriors and Impis will be played next weekend at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue. Participating teams will be the top two from each of the regional 7s series.
