Dei Biopharma files 7 New Cancer Vaccine with USPTO
Ugandan biotechnology firm Dei BioPharma has filed seven groundbreaking patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Speared headed by founder and inventor Dr. Matthias Magoola, these filings establish a molecularly organized framework for a modular portfolio of off-the-shelf messenger RNA (mRNA) cancer vaccines.
“These filings are an effort to build, target by target, the scientific and manufacturing foundation that will make many cancers preventable and controllable or less likely to return” he said
The "Off-the-Shelf" Modular Strategy Unlike traditional personalized cancer vaccines that must be custom-manufactured from a specific patient's biopsy, Dei BioPharma's technology targets recurrent molecular alterations across defined groups of cancer patients.
According to Dei Biopharma Founder, It matches therapies based on the molecular characteristics of tumors and the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type of the patient, rather than focusing purely on the organ where the cancer originated.
“Our ambition is global and deliberately long-term: to develop a modular immune platform capable of addressing the molecular drivers behind an expanding share of human cancers,”said Dr Magoola
The seven applications cover different molecular targets associated with specific cancer types.
They include a BCR-ABL fusion-junction target associated with fusion-positive leukaemia and an EGFRvIII deletion-junction target relevant to certain glioma subgroups.
Other applications cover NPM1 in molecularly defined acute myeloid leukaemia, a multiplex RAS hotspot design targeting RAS-mutant tumours across several organs, and a TP53 R175H target.
The portfolio also includes sequence-attenuated HPV16/18 constructs aimed at cancers driven by human papillomavirus, as well as an omnibus platform architecture intended to support the development of multiple target-specific products. The candidates will be produced out of Dei BioPharma's massive 250-acre manufacturing complex located in Matugga, Wakiso District near Kampala, Uganda.
The facility is built to international standards (including US FDA, EMA, and WHO guidelines) and aims to produce affordable therapeutics for the 90% of the world's population currently locked out of biological treatments
