BREAKING!! Bobi Wine Faces Possible Disqualification From Presidential Contest For 'insufficient signatures'

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing a tense moment as its presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, risks disqualification from the upcoming elections. The Electoral Commission (EC) has reportedly told the party that it has not submitted the required number of signatures to support his nomination.

Secretary General of NUP, David Lewis Rubongoya, revealed this shocking news during a press briefing on Friday. He said the party had been seeking updates from the EC for weeks, only to learn at the last minute that their submission might be insufficient.

The claim has caused alarm within the party, as it comes just days before the nomination deadline. Rubongoya expressed that this short notice has left the party scrambling to verify and correct the situation before the final submission dates.

Despite the EC's claim, NUP insists it had submitted far more than the legally required 100 signatures from each of the 98 districts. Rubongoya argued that the sudden declaration of insufficiency seems suspicious, especially given the party’s efforts to comply fully with the law.

The Secretary General raised concerns about the EC’s verification process. According to him, the commission is not only checking submitted lists but is also calling the phone numbers of individuals who signed to confirm their support. Rubongoya argued that this method is problematic due to alleged intimidation of NUP supporters by government agencies.

He explained that local officials, including DPCs, DISOs, and GISOs, have reportedly been pressuring people who signed the NUP list. Rubongoya warned that the EC’s verification process could play into the hands of those seeking to weaken the party’s support ahead of the elections.

The nomination window is set for Tuesday, 23rd September, and Wednesday, 24th September 2025. All candidates must submit their documents and meet pre-nomination requirements within this two-day period at the EC headquarters in Lubowa, Wakiso District.

With just a few days left, NUP now faces a race against time to address any shortfall in signatures. Rubongoya said the EC will provide a detailed report showing which districts have missing signatures. This will allow the party to fill any gaps before the nomination deadline.

The situation has heightened tensions in Uganda’s political landscape, as Bobi Wine is a major challenger in the presidential race. Disqualification at this stage could have significant implications for the party and the election as a whole.

Rubongoya concluded by urging the EC to act transparently and swiftly. He emphasized the importance of fair verification and warned that any delay or manipulation could undermine public trust in the electoral process. The coming days will be critical for NUP as it works to safeguard Bobi Wine’s candidacy. ADVERTISE WITH UGANDA NEWS WEBSITES ASSOCIATION
