Bobi Wine Honored as Hero of Democracy in New York Gala.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine real name Robert Sentamu received the 'Leader in Courage and Innovation' award at the Renew Democracy Initiative's gala in New York City, alongside figures like John Bolton and Mark Kelly.
In his speech, he dedicated it to Ugandans killed, detained, or disappeared in the fight for freedom, spotlighting women supporters like mother-of-two Olivia Lutaaya held since 2022 on what critics call political charges.
The 44-year-old former musician and National Unity Platform president, now in exile after challenging President Yoweri Museveni's long rule, uses such platforms to highlight repression amid disputed elections.
Supporters celebrated the nod to his bravery, while one critic questioned honoring his two presidential losses.
Honored to have been recognised as a Leader in Courage and Innovation (2026) by the Renew Democracy in New York City last night.
Bobi Wine said “I dedicate this award to the Ugandan men and women who have been killed, unfairly detained, or disappeared in our collective pursuit for a better Uganda. Their sacrifices shall certainly pray off”
He also applauded his fellow award winners: Amb. John Bolton (US National Security Advisor 2018-19 and US Ambassador to the UN 2005-06); Ms. Caf reeland (Economic Advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada 2020-24); and Sen Mark Kelly (US Senator for Arizona and NASA Astronaut 1996-2011) for their contribution to democratic causes.
According to reliable sources Bobi Wine is expected to return to his home Uganda any time from now to continue his political path in opposition politics.
