For the first time ever, the Irish community in Uganda organized a golf championship at the lake side par-71 Entebbe club on Saturday, 30th March 2024.

The tournament is also a celebration of the Irish community in Uganda having marked 70 years this year as the Irish Embassy clocked 3 decades.

The event happened in the month of March to coincide with the St. Patrick celebrations.

The day-long championship was graced by 139 players among which were the Attorney General of the Republic of Uganda Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka and the High Commissioner of the republic of Kenya to Uganda H.E General (Rtd). George Owino.

Irish Ambassador H.E. Kevin Colgan also took part and was the chief guest.

By close of business, Marin Etienne and Jovia Tugume emerged as the outstanding male and female respective golfers.

Etienne scored a massive 42 stable-ford points whilst Tugume had 39 stable-ford points.

“I had a perfect day and my recent rounds on the course made it count” Tugume who played off handicap 19 stated.

Perhaps, the gloss and bragging rights for the day belonged to Dr. Peter Apell who shot an ace on par-3 hole number 12.

Dr. Apell’s feat was witnessed by playing mates; Andrew Baguma, Yunus Bbaale and Vincent Katutsi.

He was also rewarded with the nearest to the pin prize as Harriet Kitaka took the female prize

Other top performers:

Tony Kisadha won the men group A with 39 points, one better than John Paul Basabose. Lino Anguzu scored 36 points to finish as second runners up in group A.

Lony Akena (41 points) toppled the rest in group B with Geoffrey Byamugisha and Collin Talemwa taking the first and second runners up positions on 38 points and 37 points respectively.

Ronald Gayiya won group C men with 40 points; James Okema followed on 38 points and Timothy Okanya with 37 points.

Ladies:

Harriet Kitaka won group A ladies with a 36 points count-back victory over Sarah Nduhukire.

Rita Apell was second runners up in group A with 34 points.

For ladies group B, Thorunn Hreggvidsdotir was outstanding with 38 points ahead of Joseph Babirye (35 points) and Sarah Worthington (32 points).

Side-bets:

Ronald Osekeny shot longest among the men on par-4 hole 18 with Peris Vanessa the best for the females.

Dr. Apell took home the nearest to the pin men prize with Harriet Kitaka succeeding for the females.

The Genesis of this tournament is rooted in the Irish Society charitable contribution towards various good causes in the Ugandan community.

This year around, at least Ug.Shs 100m was intended to be raised through various activities among which Golf was part.

Outstanding golfers were rewarded with supplementary prizes received from an assortment of sponsors and partners as; Rubalika Safari Lodge and Farm, Casa Seán, Yellow Haven Lodge, Sky Beach Hotel, The Coffee Lodge at Clarke Farm, Entebbe Sailing Club, Wild Frontiers and Exclusive Camps and Lodges, The Boma Hotel, Entebbe, Hinriksh Beach Bar and Restaurant (formerly 2-Friends), Paddy O’Ganda Irish Bar and restaurant and ICON Lounge Forest Mall.
