Twice in a space of two years, Uganda U-20 national team (The Hippos) has lost to their Ghana counterparts during a cup final.

First was that 0-2 loss in Mauritania during the 2021 AFCON U-20 final.

The latest bitter loss was the hard fought 1-0 win for Ghana on home soil at the Accra sports stadium during the final of the 13th African Games.

Moments after the defeat in Accra, Uganda Hippos head coach Morley Byekwaso Ochama hailed the achievement and consistence of his team.

Byekwaso castigated the rustiness in front of goal during the game but was quick to hint upon the great plan for this particular cluster of players in the box.

“I want to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life. We played so well in the first half but piled a lot of pressure on our side when we failed to pass the ball in the second half. Nevertheless, I thank the players for the good effort through the group stages until the final. We failed to utilize our chances, otherwise, it would have been our win. There is a good plan of progression of these players to be elevated to the U-23 and the senior national team” Byekwaso who also handled the team in 2021 stated in the official post match press conference.

Talented African block:

Reflecting upon the entire tournament that had eight countries, Byekwaso pointed to the pool of talented African players, and this has provided him and the players learning moments.

“Africa is talented with abundant players” Byekwaso noted. “We learnt a lot from every game played at this championship and this will surely develop our game” he added.

Crowd darling Patrick Jonah Kakande and Bruno Bunyaga had moments before Afriyie’s goal had opportunities to bury the game but fluffed their chances where it mattered most.

Nigeria earned silver whilst Uganda who overcame Senegal in the shoot-out settled for bronze.

Overall, Uganda won 20 medals; 4 gold, 6 silver and 10 bronze at the 13th African Games in Ghana.

The 2027 edition will be hosted in Egypt.
