UBOS launches activities for statistics week

Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) joins other African National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in celebrating this year’s Africa Statistics Day on November 18, 2025.

Africa Statistics Week is an annual event, usually held in November, to raise public awareness about the importance of statistics and their role in social and economic development across the continent.

The theme is: “Leveraging Innovations in Data and Statistics to Promote a Just, Peaceful, Inclusive, and Prosperous Society for Africans.”

The week-long celebration, which culminates in Africa Statistics Day on November 18th, involves various activities like forums, workshops, and media engagements led by national statistical offices to promote data use and strengthen statistical systems.

The theme each year focuses on a specific aspect of statistical modernization and its impact on development, such as supporting Sustainable Peace or Leveraging Innovation.

Addressing the media in Kampala Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, UBOS Executive Director and Chief Statistician noted that the Bureau will focus on four key areas during the commemorations — highlighting innovations, promoting inclusivity, fostering collaboration, and empowering evidence-based decision-making.

“This year’s theme echoes UBOS’s continued commitment to harness modern data production technologies to generate quality statistics for national development,” Dr. Mukiza stated.

He further revealed that throughout the Africa Statistics Week, UBOS will showcase the latest technological advancements in data collection, analysis, and dissemination in Uganda. The activities will engage stakeholders from various sectors, including government agencies, academia, civil society, and the general public.

UBOS has encouraged data sharing and collaboration among producers, users, and innovators in the statistics field.

“ Public awareness campaigns will educate Ugandans about the importance of accurate data in shaping national policies and generating informed public debate,”Mukiza stressed.

UBOS Head of Public Relations Didacus Okoth Stold the media that the celebration will feature a week long lineup of events aimed at highlighting the transformative role of modern data technologies in fostering evidence-based planning and decision-making.
