UBL,Cipla-QC, UNRA tops Employer of the Year Awards 2022 for Best Employer Practices.
The Employer of the Year awards, organized by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) an apex body for employers in Uganda during a glamourous dinner event recognized the best companies with the best human resource practices.
While organizing the Employer of the Year Awards (EYA), the FUE initiative that rewards Employers with best practices I partnered with Makerere University School of Psychology to conduct a survey that climaxed with the awards.
During the colorful red-carpet event held at Hotel Serena in Kampala on Thursday 21st July 2022, the Minister of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, Betty Among pictured below, re-echoed the need for transforming the administrative functions of human resources (HR) into opportunities to drive engagement, productivity, and business value to ensure control, proper monitoring and supervision of wage performance and implementation of structures.
“As a ministry-we pledge to support the employers under the Federation in developing policies that are favorable in achieving a decent work agenda for Ugandans. Streamlined and standardized human resource operations create seamless information exchange through integrations with other key Systems like ICT thus enabling online approval of structures and establishment as well as improving network and connectivity across the board,” she said
The Chairman FUE, Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, in picture below, who is also the MD of National Water and Sewerage Corporation, advised employers to be innovative, build value systems and emphasize productivity for business growth in order to be resilient order to understand productivity and be able to maximize output given the available resources
“When I think of resilience, I want to look at how employees are optimistic and hoping for the best in all situations,” he said
The overall Gold winners of EYA2022 was Uganda Breweries, in piture below, followed by the Cipla-Quality Chemical as a Silver Winner and the Bronze winner was Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).
Other winners were: Young Employers: Biocore Enterprises Ltd, SMEs winner: Partners for Children Worldwide, Government: Ministry of Public Service, Elimination of Child Labour: Rwenzori Commodities Ltd, Disability Inclusion: Cheshire Services, SRHR and Gender Equality – Naational Union of People wih Disability (NUDIPU), Refugees Employers: Marifa Investments, Talent Management: AMREF among others
Prof. Kikoma Julius, EYA Survey Team Leader from Makerere University said that during the EYA survey, they discovered that outstanding Employers built sustainable systems, upheld the health and wellness of their employees & adapted new technology to ably continue business operations.
The Keynote Speaker of the employers awards, Dr. Joseph Muvawala, from the National Planning Authority (NPA) said “The Future of Work will be built on aspects of networking, persuasive communication, continuous learning, data, digitization, and technological advancement. Employers should not plan for the future but be ready for the future”
Adding that “Uganda is not yet ready for the minimum wage because our productivity is still low”
The Executive Director, FUE, Douglas Opio in his opening remarks applauded Employers for their resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. He revealed that two new categories were introduced in the survey focusing on Refugees and the Elimination of Child Labour.

For over 20 years, FUE has conducted the Employer of the Year Awards (EYA) to recognize and reward best employment practices to enhance maximum productivity among Employers.
The Employer of the Year Awards (EYA) is an initiative to reward Employers with best practices by partnering with Makerere University School of Psychology. The school provides a team that executes a survey through our member companies to examine different employment practices and the data collected informs who qualifies to win an award and in which category.
