Trump favorite Laura Loomer plumbs depths of depravity with latest attack
Remember when Ann Coulter was the worst Republican pundit? That old conservative firebrand is positively tame in comparison to the filth that Donald Trump’s MAGA movement has dredged up. It’s all a grift, and one that requires plumbing new depths of depravity to keep their culty followers fully engaged. And far-right “activist” Laura Loomer has hit what might very well be rock bottom. Loomer got her start with James O’Keefe’s deplorable Project Veritas. She has since built a large online presence, including nearly 1 million followers on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. She has run for Congress twice and lost both times—but somehow Donald Trump hasn’t pegged her as a “loser.” Instead, he tried to foist her on his campaign, which was a bridge too far for even some of his most ardent supporters. She is that toxic. Yet Trump continues to promote her work. “Everyone who works for him thinks she’s a liability,” one Trump ally told NBC News. A Washington Post story on Loomer noted in a subhed that “The anti-Islam, anti-immigration crusader has repelled even would-be allies in the MAGA movement—with one major exception.” That exception, of course, being Trump. Loomer loves to mix it up with fellow Republicans and make references to “Rep. Marjorie Traitor Greene.” She also thinks Rep. Matt Gaetz doesn’t “have a real set of balls.” For her part, Greene was one of the people who warned Trump against hiring Loomer for his campaign, saying that she was “mentally unstable and a documented liar” (as if that ever stopped the Trump campaign … or Greene before). The problem with the likes of Loomer is that their schtick requires them to continuously one-up themselves, lest their followers grow bored and move on to someone else. And that’s what prompts vile displays like the one below, in reaction to Joe Biden expressing his support for son Hunter in the wake of his conviction on federal gun charges. It’s pretty obvious that Loomer can’t stand the thought of an actual loving family, one that embraces each other and shows compassion to those who are struggling with addiction. Loomer’s bizarre insistence that Hunter isn’t Jill Biden’s son is grotesque, as he was 6 years old when the Bidens married. She is his mother, biology be damned. Joe Biden met Jill three years after his first wife’s tragic death, and they were introduced by his brother. They married five years after Neilia died. So what is this cheating accusation? Jill’s ex-husband Bill Stevenson is deep in the MAGA world, and he’s been screeching about the “Biden crime family” for several years on conservative media. Among his unfounded claims: that the Bidens had an affair while Jill was still married to him, a charge that Jill denies. Given that he’s a Trumper with a federal fraud conviction (among other legal troubles), and one without a shred of evidence, it’s not hard to side with the Bidens. Meanwhile, take a moment to ponder Loomer’s attacks: Joe Biden is a bad husband and parent! This is the same Loomer that glosses over Trump’s endless infidelities, including one with an adult film actress while his wife was at home with a newborn child. Yup, apparently adultery is only bad if Democrats do it. And no one has ever accused Trump of being a good father, or even a barely adequate one. I’ll never forget his own children’s speeches at the Republican National Conventions in 2016 and 2020, none of which included amusing anecdotes about their attentive, loving father. With conservatives, every accusation is a confession. But those baseless accusations serve a purpose. It’s easier to stomach their Dear Leader’s many failings as a human if they can convince themselves that Biden is just as bad, if not worse. It allows for the “yeah, but …” responses to accurate hits on Trump’s own character flaws. Trump cheated on his wife? Yeah, but so did Joe Biden! The point here isn’t that horrible people like Loomer exist. As noted, much of the MAGA faithful and Trump’s own advisers consider her toxic and dangerous. The point is that Trump can’t quit her, continues to amplify her, invites her to hang out with him, and otherwise considers her someone worth engaging with. That there are people plumbing the filthiest depths of the MAGA movement is not a story. That Trump loves to spend time there with them is.
