Sri Lanka Records a Competitive Advantage
The toss fell in favour of Sri Lanka and they chose to bat first so that they could give the opposition a challenge to match in front of their home audience. They were highly competitive with 178-7 and this was to a great extent dependent on the brilliance of Pathum Nissanka. Nissanka, who had finished his spectacular century-long streak against Australia without a loss, was in the same mood, making a fluent 62 off 41 balls with eight boundaries against them.
Pavan Rathnayake was the right support Nissanka could have as he delivered the late fireworks necessary to increase the run rate. Rathnayake broke a rapid 44 with only 25 balls hitting two huge sixes and three fences into the stands. Sri Lanka was able to set what appeared to be a match winning score in spite of frequent breaches by the Zimbabwean bowling attack.
Zimbabwe's Masterful Chase
It is not an easy task to pursue 179 with the lights against a Sri Lankan bowling line up that is very strong. During a large part of the innings, Zimbabwe seemed to be falling behind the necessary run rate. But they were held back by the dramatic first swinger, Brian Bennett. Bennett created his innings of the life, and ended up unbeaten on 63 of 48 balls. Amazingly enough, Bennett has not been sacked in this whole World Cup campaign having scored 48 against Oman and 64 against Australia.
The actual turning point of the game came when Zimbabwean captain Sikandar Raza took charge of things. Knowing that the asking rate was rising at an alarming rate, Raza counter-attacked violently. He smashed 45 off only 26 balls smashing four massive sixes and two boundaries to send the pressure back squarely on the Sri Lankan bowlers.
A Dramatic Finish
The play reached its climax with the 19th over when Sri Lankan leg-spinner, Dushan Hemantha, sent both Raza and Tashinga Musekiwa packing. The ex-post facto strike shook the Sri Lankan followers with hope. The lower order of the Zimbabweans did not lose their nerve, however. Tony Munyonga opened the last over with a vital six, and that appropriately it was Brian Bennett who delivered his eighth boundary of the match to win the historic victory with three balls left.
After the game, a celebrating Captain Raza recognised their position as underdogs by saying, I do not believe that anybody gave us a chance. It is a good place to be in order to win the hearts and the respect of everyone. If we can win 2 of three games who knows what can happen. On the other hand, the Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka complained of his fielding performance, which he said cost them a lot because of his lack of trust in the field.
