Speke Resort Munyonyo provided a prestigious platform for celebrating Uganda-India friendship as the Indian community gathered for a colourful Diwali Food and Music Festival, highlighting the enduring cultural, social and economic ties between the two countries.
Speke Resort Munyonyo once again demonstrated its position as one of Uganda’s leading destinations for international events and cultural celebrations when it hosted this year’s Diwali Festival, bringing together government officials, diplomats, business leaders and members of the Indian community.
The colourful celebration, held on Sunday, was a reflection of the longstanding friendship between Uganda and India, with food, music and cultural performances creating an atmosphere of unity, appreciation and shared heritage.
The successful hosting of the event further highlighted the contribution of Speke Resort Munyonyo and its proprietor, businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, to providing world-class hospitality facilities that bring people, cultures and international communities together.
Through its impressive facilities, hospitality standards and ability to host high-profile gatherings, Speke Resort Munyonyo continues to strengthen Uganda’s profile as a preferred destination for major conferences, diplomatic engagements, cultural festivals and international celebrations.
Sudhir Ruparelia's contribution to promoting Uganda's international image
The role of Dr Sudhir Ruparelia in Uganda's hospitality and tourism industry was reflected in the choice of Speke Resort Munyonyo as the venue for an event of such cultural and diplomatic significance.
As one of Uganda's prominent entrepreneurs, Ruparelia has invested in hospitality and tourism infrastructure that provides platforms for international visitors, business communities and cultural organisations to engage and interact.
Speke Resort Munyonyo has increasingly become an important meeting point for international conferences, government functions, corporate engagements and cultural events, contributing to Uganda's visibility as a destination for international gatherings.
By providing a suitable environment for the Diwali celebrations, the resort supported an occasion that went beyond entertainment to promote cultural understanding, strengthen relationships and celebrate the contribution of the Indian community to Uganda's development.
Leaders commend Indian community's contribution to Uganda
Vice President Jessica Alupo, who was the chief guest, commended the Indian community for its longstanding contribution to Uganda's social and economic development.
She was accompanied by Minister for Kampala Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, Kampala Mayor Salim Uhuru and the Acting Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, among other dignitaries.
Alupo described the relationship between Uganda and India as one built on cooperation, shared interests and longstanding people-to-people connections.
She particularly recognised the Indian Association of Uganda for its contribution to healthcare through free medical services, including support for heart surgeries and other medical interventions for Ugandans.
The Vice President reaffirmed government's commitment to maintaining a favourable environment for cooperation and investment, recognising the important role played by the Indian community in the country's development.
A friendship spanning more than 100 years
Indian Association of Uganda Chairman Paresh Mehta said the Diwali celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on more than a century of Indian presence and contribution to Uganda.
“Our story in Uganda is not for a year or a decade. It is for more than 100 years. Our forefathers dedicated their lives to the development of Uganda, and we honour their efforts,” Mehta said.
He appreciated government and the First Family for maintaining peace and stability, which he said had enabled the Indian community to live, work and invest in Uganda.
Mehta reaffirmed the association's commitment to supporting Uganda's development through continued investment, community engagement and social initiatives.
He also highlighted the cultural significance of the gathering, including the celebration of the formation of four great states of India.
Speke Resort Munyonyo: A bridge between cultures
Diwali, popularly known as the Festival of Lights, symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and hope over despair.
At Speke Resort Munyonyo, the celebrations brought these values to life through a vibrant display of Indian cuisine, music and cultural experiences, offering Ugandans and members of the Indian community an opportunity to appreciate each other's traditions.
The event also demonstrated the importance of hospitality establishments such as Speke Resort Munyonyo in facilitating cultural diplomacy and strengthening international relationships.
For Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, the resort's involvement in hosting such gatherings reflects the wider contribution of private-sector investment to Uganda's tourism, hospitality and cultural landscape.
Beyond providing accommodation and event facilities, Speke Resort Munyonyo offers a platform where different communities can celebrate their heritage, build partnerships and develop lasting relationships.
As Uganda and India continue to deepen their cooperation in trade, investment, healthcare and community development, the Diwali Festival served as a powerful reminder that meaningful international relationships are sustained not only through diplomacy but also through shared cultural experiences.
With Speke Resort Munyonyo providing the setting for this important celebration, the event further underscored the value of Uganda's hospitality industry and the role of visionary private-sector investment in bringing the world closer to Uganda.
