PELUM, KHEA kicks off Farmers caravan 2022 to boost organic farming knowledge and market access.
Under the theme: “Sharing Organic Agriculture and experience”, Civil society Organization; The Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture in Eastern Africa (KHEA) and Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Uganda has kicked off a 5 day farmers caravan starting on 14th to 18th February 2022 to tour different organic farmers in different parts of Uganda.
The aim of the farmers caravan is to stimulate debate like, understanding and application of organic farming practices to further strength Uganda's food and agriculture systems.
While launching the 2022 farmers caravan on 13th February 2022 at Esella hotel l, Najera in Kampala, The representative of the Country Director Just Joshua Luyimbazi, noted that the farmers caravan is a landmark event of the organization which creates a platform for different farmers to learn from each other right from the multiplayer farmers to small scale organic farmers.
He says that this will help farmers share exercise, knowledge and market access for organic products in Uganda and abroad.
“The Farmers caravan initiative will allow organic farmers share experience and knowledge about organic agriculture as the national organic policy is user implementation” he said
The Communication Officer KHEA Mageno Pamela highlighted that along side the farmers caravan tours, there will be Meet Africa's farmers campaign to gather farmers voices on organic farming practices they are involved in as a result of the trainings conducted by KHEA which she says will also profile on the continental digital platforms.
“Under the Farmers caravan, we are going to be conducting the “Meet Africa's Farmers” campaign to gather voices to understand their organic farming practices, their success, how to support them and share market access information” she said.
The Project Manager KHEA, Francis Nsanja said that as they are in the process to implementation 2nd phrase of KHEA project due in April 2022, they would like to register the successes achievements of the 1st phrase since 2019 while promoting organic agriculture.
The farmers caravan according to KHEA bring ngs together stakeholders from farmers, multipliers drawn from all the 4 regions of Uganda, including media, MAAIF, youth, model farmers among others.
Farmers to be visited during the caravan tours are from Kampala, Wakiso, Kayunga, Masaka, Nakaseke among others.
