When Mary, a 36-year-old woman from Iganga District in Uganda, said “I do” to her husband Patrick twelve years ago, she believed nothing would ever shake their marriage. They had built a home together, raised two children, and gone through life’s struggles hand in hand. Their neighbors often admired them, saying they were the perfect example of a peaceful and united couple. But behind that image, Mary was fighting a silent battle that nearly destroyed her completely.

The trouble started when Patrick met a woman named Sharon who had rented a shop near his workplace. At first, Mary didn’t think much of it. She saw Sharon as just another businesswoman passing through town. But slowly, the signs started showing. Patrick began coming home late, carrying new clothes he didn’t explain, and suddenly becoming very protective of his phone. Mary tried to brush it off, hoping it was just a passing phase, but her heart kept telling her something was terribly wrong.

One afternoon, while she was at the market buying food, Mary overheard two women talking. They mentioned that Patrick had been seen several times with the same woman and that he had even told some people he was thinking of taking her as another wife. Mary felt dizzy. She stood still for a while, unable to understand how her husband—her partner of over a decade—could even think of such a thing. In their village, such news spreads fast, and soon whispers began reaching her from all directions. People pitied her, some mocked her, and others watched silently to see how the story would end.

Things got worse when Patrick openly began treating Sharon as if she was part of his future. He stopped eating at home, no longer spoke kindly to Mary, and even stopped supporting some of the responsibilities in the house.

It was as if he had already chosen the other woman over his own family. The humiliation was too much. Every day felt like a nightmare. Mary lost weight, cried at night, and felt her life falling apart. She tried talking to Patrick several times, but he dismissed her completely.
