Makerere University Students Rally for Digital Future as Huawei Launches the 2025-2026 Huawei ICT Competition Roadshow.

Makerere University’s College of Computing and Information Science in collaboration with Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Company Limited has today successfully concluded a high-impact engagement session to officially launch the roadshow for the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition 2025/2026. The event, which drew significant enthusiasm from talented students across technology and engineering disciplines, served as a platform to introduce participants to the competition's potential to shape their professional futures. 

A team of certified experts and instructors from Huawei delivered a comprehensive presentation detailing the structure, themes, competition rules and benefits of the global competition when participating in one of the four tracks of Cloud, Computing, Network, and Innovation.

Network Track: This covers Data Communication Network, Security, WLAN, Routing & Switching and Network Security.

Cloud Track: Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Computing Track: Cloud and Server operating systems based on openEuler, Database Management Systems based on openGauss, and Kunpeng architecture.

Innovation: Focuses on ingenuity and practical innovation of new ideas

The Huawei ICT Competition roadshows essentially aim to maximize outreach and talent identification in different institutions of higher learning across the country. It provides a direct, interactive platform to effectively communicate the competition's structure, significant benefits such as fully sponsored training, globally recognized certifications, success stories, internships and job opportunities and the latest in the respective tracks. This competition aligns directly with Uganda's push to bridge the digital skills gap between academic theory and industry demands through certification for career advancement, and offers unique networking opportunities at an international level granting them the necessary exposure to address day to day challenges. Furthermore, this physical presence at the roadshows builds trust and direct engagement with students and faculty, answers on-the-spot questions, encourages onsite registration, and helps foster the crucial industry-academia collaboration needed to nurture a robust, future-ready ICT talent ecosystem in Uganda.

At the roadshow, Huawei underscored its commitment to nurturing local talent it’s an investment in the next generation of African digital leaders. Huawei has over the years worked with Makerere University to consistently produce exceptional talent eager to leverage Huawei’s technologies to innovate for a better Uganda leaving no one behind and looks forward to supporting them fully as they prepare for the national and subsequent regional rounds with a team of highly qualified instructors.

In his remarks, Mr Sunday Emmanuel the Chairperson Makerere University Technology Society called upon the students to actively participate in the registration and enrollment of the competition so as to acquire essential and marketable skills which make them more competitive in the job market. He extended his sincere appreciation to Huawei for the continued support and collaboration in providing a globally recognized platform for our students to test their capabilities against the best in the world. “We are extremely honored to be a part of this prestigious competition and we look forward to demonstrating our commitment to excellence in ICT." he said.

The registered students will now proceed with free online learning and training to practice under the guidance of the Huawei ICT Academy Instructors provided by Huawei. The preliminary stages of the competition focus on rigorous theoretical knowledge and technical skills, paving the way for the top performers to advance to the national stage and potentially represent Uganda at the regional competitions and global finals in China.
