Team dynamics are set to shift as Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, will not feature in the fifth and final Test at The Oval. According to reports, the decision was made by the BCCI medical team to manage Bumrah’s workload and ensure his long-term fitness ahead of a packed international schedule.
In his place, Akash Deep, who has been declared fully fit, is set to join the playing XI. The news was first reported by ESPNcricinfo and has since been confirmed by sources close to the team.
Before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy began, the management had already indicated that Bumrah would feature in only three of the five red-ball matches. Having bowled 33 overs in the previous Test in Manchester, Bumrah hasn't bowled since the morning of Day 4 at Old Trafford. His exclusion appears to be a precautionary move influenced by the nature of the Oval pitch and the need for workload management.
Earlier, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak commented, “Bumrah is fit, and he bowled in one innings in the last match. The head coach, physio, and captain will make the final decision. There have been no discussions yet.” However, the final verdict has now been made—rest over risk.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir also stated that all pacers in the squad were fit. This included Akash Deep, who returns from a groin injury, and Arshdeep Singh, who is set to make his debut in this high-stakes Test match. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj remains a consistent presence and is expected to feature in his fifth consecutive match of the series.
Who Replaces Bumrah in the Playing XI?
With Bumrah sitting out, Akash Deep is the obvious choice. He impressed everyone with a 10-wicket haul in the second Test and now returns fully fit. Arshdeep Singh, expected to replace Anshul Kamboj, is another exciting addition to the pace attack.
