My name is Grace, and I come from Kasese in Western Uganda. My story is painful, but it also has a beautiful ending that I want to share because many people silently go through the same situation. Years ago, when I was still a young woman, a neighbor brought me a small girl who had been abandoned by her mother.
The child was only two years old, confused, hungry, and crying uncontrollably. I remember holding her tiny hand and feeling an instant connection. I named her Esther and decided I would raise her as my own, even though I had very little. I was selling vegetables in Kasese town at that time, and sometimes what I earned was not even enough for food, but I made sure she was fed, clean, and loved.
As the years passed, I sacrificed everything to ensure she had a good life. I paid her school fees from the little I earned, walked long distances to save money, and sometimes slept hungry so she could eat a decent meal. Many people wondered why I was working so hard for a child who was not mine, but to me, she was my daughter.
I raised her with discipline, respect, and hope for a better future. I believed that one day she would grow up and appreciate everything I had done for her.
