From Being Ridiculed for Poverty to Achieving Success!! My Path to a Better Life

My name is Samuel Kato, and I grew up in Jinja, Uganda. For much of my life, I struggled to survive. I took on small casual jobs—cleaning shops, unloading goods from trucks, and occasionally selling fruit along the roadside.

Every shilling I earned went toward food, rent, or supporting my younger siblings. I often wore the same worn-out shirt for days, and my shoes were patched so many times they barely stayed intact. People in my neighborhood mocked me. Some made fun of me as I passed by, calling me “the dreamer” because I once shared my goal of owning a shop in town.

It’s painful when those around you see you as a failure. Even relatives avoided discussing business or money with me, assuming I was destined to remain poor. But I refused to abandon my dream.
