Fistula Foundation Rallies Uganda Partners on Specialized Nursing Care to End Obstetric Fistula

Webinar, Uganda— The Fistula Foundation has rallied its partners in Uganda to prioritize specialized nursing care for obstetric fistula patients, emphasizing quality post-operative care, discharge planning, and strict patient instructions.

The call was made during a practical nursing training webinar held in August 2026, hosted by Monica Opus.

The training attracted partners from across the country including Alice Emasu, Charles Opolot, Elvis, Esther among others. Key implementing partners include Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Kitovu Hospital, UBS and others.

Host Monica Opus emphasized the role of nurses beyond the theatre:

 “Surgery is only one step. What happens after — how we nurse, how we counsel, how we discharge and follow up the patient — is what determines full healing and dignity. We are urging all partners in Uganda to embrace specialized nursing care as a standard, not an option,” said Monica Opus.

Alice Emasu, a partner in the fistula response, called for consistency in care:

 “We have seen that when discharge instructions are clear and strictly followed, recovery is faster and reintegration is easier. We need to harmonize our nursing best practices across all fistula treatment centers in Uganda,” Alice Emasu noted.

The session highlighted that Fistula Foundation community sessions provide ongoing clinical guidance for post-operative care, while international bodies like FIGO continue to run regional trainings to address capacity gaps in resource-limited settings.
