What are the Documents Required for PAN Card?

When you are applying for a new PAN card or applying for a correction in the existing one, you are required to provide a few documents for verification. The applicants are required to complete Form 49A or Form 49AA based on their residential status. These forms must be submitted along with a set of valid documents to the Income Tax Department. The documents required can vary depending on the individual or organisation. 

Read this article to know the different types of documents that are required for a PAN Card Application.

Documents required by HUFs and Individuals (For Indian Citizens)

If you are an individual citizen of India or a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), then you are required to provide 3 types of documents for any PAN-related process. These documents are:

1. Documents needed for Proof of Identity (PoI)

The applicants are required to provide a copy of the following documents.

  • Your Voter ID card
  • Your Aadhaar Card
  • A valid passport
  • Ration card having the applicant's photo
  • Your driving license
  • Arms license
  • Central government health scheme card
  • A copy of the pensioner's card, along with a photograph.
  • A photo ID card issued by the central or state government or any undertaking of the public sector.
  • A certificate issued by a bank that should be duly attested and must contain the applicant's photo and bank account number.

Original of:

  • An identity certificate in a prescribed format, signed by a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Member of Parliament, Municipal Councillor or a Gazetted officer.
  • Bank statement on letterhead from the bank branch, along with the name and stamp of the issuing officer, that contains a duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant. 

 Note: 

  • For minor applicants, the parent or the legal guardian's proof of identity shall be deemed to be the proof of identity and address for the minor applicant
  • For HUFs, an affidavit by the karta of the HUF stating the name, father's name and address of all the coparceners on the date of application will work as proof of identity. 

2. Documents needed for Proof of Address (PoA)

The applicants are required to provide a copy of the following documents.

  • Electricity bills
  • Landline connection bills
  • Broadband connection bills
  • Your voter ID card containing a photograph
  • Your Aadhaar card
  • Passport
  • Spouse's passport
  • Bank account statements
  • Credit card statements
  • Latest order for property tax assessment
  • Domicile certificate allotted by the government
  • Driving License
  • Property Registration Documents
  • A passbook of the post office account containing the applicant's address.
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issued by the Central or State Government (not more than 3 years old)

Note: Utility bills and bank credit/debit card statements should be recent and not more than 3 years old. 

3. Documents needed for Proof of Date of Birth (DOB)

The applicants are required to provide a copy of the following documents.

  • Birth certificate 
  • Matriculation Certificate
  • Your Aadhaar card
  • Your driving license
  • Passport 
  • Pension payment order
  • Marriage certificate issued by the Marriage Registrar's office
  • An affidavit stating the Date of Birth, which is signed before a magistrate
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Indian government or any state government
  • Your photo identity card issued by the Central or State government, or the Central Public Sector undertaking, or the State Public Sector undertaking.

Documents required by HUFs and Individuals (For non-residents of India)

The documents required for individuals and HUF's living outside India are slightly different. They are not required to submit their date of birth documents as proof. They are only required to provide their proof of identity and proof of address. The documents required are:

1. Documents recognised as Proof of Identity (PoI)

The applicants are required to provide a copy of the following documents.

  • Your passport
  • An OCI card allotted by the Indian government
  • A PIO card allotted by the Indian government

Note:

  • Citizenship ID number, National ID number or Taxpayer ID number must be properly attested either by the Apostille or by any of the Indian Embassy/ High Commission/ Indian Consulate functioning in the applicant's home country.

2. Documents recognised as Proof of Address

The applicants are required to provide a copy of the following documents.

  • Your passport
  • PIO card allotted by the Indian Government
  • OCI card allotted by the Indian Government
  • Non-Resident External (NRE) bank account statements in India
  • Bank account statements from the country where the applicant resides
  • Registration certificate issued by the Office of Foreigners Registration that shows an Indian address.

Note

Citizenship ID number, National ID number or Taxpayer ID number must be properly attested either by the Apostille or by any of the Indian Embassy/ High Commission/ Consulate functioning in the applicant's home country. 

Documents required for PAN Card Application (for assesses other than individuals)

The term "company" includes the following:

  • A company
  • A partnership firm
  • A limited liability partnership
  • A Trust
  • Association of Persons
  • Body of Individuals
  • Local Authority
  • Artificial Juridical Person

Association of Persons, Body of Individuals, Local Authority or Artificial Juridical Person A copy of the agreement or a copy of certificate of registration number issued by the charity commissioner, Registrar of Cooperatives Societies, any other competent authority or any other document originating from any Central or State Government Department establishing the identity and address of such a person.

Documents required for PAN Card by Firms Without Offices in India

The required documents are:

1. Documents needed for Proof of Identity (PoI)

The applicants are required to provide a copy of the following documents.

  • A copy of the registration certificate issued in India or approval granted to set up offices in India by the Indian Authorities.
  • A copy of the company registration certificate issued in the country where the applicant resides, duly attested by an Apostille or by the High Commission or Consulate in the country of the applicant's residence or by the Indian Embassy or any other authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Banks in India. 

2. Documents needed for Proof of Address (PoA)

  • A copy of the registration certificate issued in India or of the approval granted to set up an office in India by the Indian authorities.
  • A copy of the company registration certificate issued in the country where the applicant resides, duly attested by an Apostille or by the Indian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in the country where the applicant is located, or authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Banks registered in India. 

Note: The applicants must ensure that all these certificates adhere to the format demanded by the Income Tax Authorities.
