Condoms still providing key protection against STIs, HIV, unwanted pregnancies: Experts call for renewed use commitment.

As the International Condom Day approaches on 13th February 2026, health practitioners have called on the public to maximize condom use which they say is a “protection that still works”. 

This years celebration will be held in Fort Portal featuring a series of activities including free condom distribution, reechoing messages on protection among others amid thrinking funding.

During a media café organised by AHF Uganda, Ministry of Health and partners, the Director General Health Service at the Ministry of Health Dr. Charles Olaro called for a renewed commitment to condom use which he says is still far better in providing in protection against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs), HIV and unwanted pregnancies.

He said that government has expressed commitment to continue funding the program with partners urging young people to make condom use a routine while in risky sexual behavior.

“Mothers sacrifice to prevent mother to child child HIV transmission but when we grow we disappoint the. Through contracting HIV at adolescent and older age. You can spend small money cheaper than you life and buy a condom. Just buy like any other item” he said

Harunah Ssemuwemba from AHF Uganda said that over the years, they have distributed condoms across Uganda through their braches in various regions.

He said that between 2018 to 2024, AHF Uganda distributed 53 million condoms, while in 2025 they distributed 3.5 million, and projecting to distribute over 4-5 million in 2026 targeting high risk populations in request and to hotspot in various places calling upon youth to avoid disorganized sexual activities.

Dr. Moses Okello from DKT Health Care International Said that Said the company produces various sexual and repridctive health brands including condoms to the market in the East African region.
