CMA CEO Josephine Okui unveils activities to mark 30 years of existence in Uganda devp’t journey.

On 30th March 2026, Capital Markets Authority (CMA) as part of the celebration to mark 30 years held a press conference to highlight significant milestones of regulatory service and protection  the investments of Ugandans since our establishment in 1996 and launched this years activities to celebrate the years that will climax in October 2026.

During the press conference,  Mrs. Josephine Okui Ossiya the CEO of CMA said that they have over the years strategically aligned with Uganda’s national development agenda to achieve the aspirations of the growth targets of Uganda which she said that  has been aimed at ensuring that capital markets play a meaningful role in financing Uganda’s long-term development priorities, including Agriculture, Tourism, infrastructure, industrialization, and Science and Technology.

“We have aligned our strategies with Uganda’s national development agenda, all the way to NDP IV, and we continue to contribute to the Ten-Year Development Framework and the aspirations of Vision 2040. This alignment ensures that capital markets play a meaningful role in financing Uganda’s long-term development priorities, including Agriculture, Tourism, infrastructure, industrialization, and Science and Technology. Over the past three decades, CMA has played a central role in building a safe, transparent, and well-regulated capital markets ecosystem in Uganda. From a modest beginning, the market has evolved to support capital raising, investment, and long-term wealth creation” she said

Okui attributed the milestones to the a strong and evolving legal and regulatory framework that has guided the development of Uganda’s capital markets over the past 30 years and the collective efforts of stakeholders and market intermediaries including  a network of institutions that are central to the functioning of Uganda’s capital markets; such as Authorized Corporate Director, Open Ended Investment Company, Trustees, Securities Central Depositories, Stock Brokers, Unit Trust Managers  and their Respective Schemes, Investment Advisers, Fund Managers, Custodians, Dealers among others.

“Our stockbrokers have enabled Ugandans to access investment opportunities and participate in wealth creation. Our fund managers and CIS operators have mobilized billions in domestic savings and channeled them into productive investments that cater to the ATMS, Our custodians and trustees have safeguarded investor assets and upheld market integrity, Our investment advisors have guided individuals and institutions in making informed financial decisions, And our securities exchanges have provided a platform for capital raising that supports both government and private sector growth” she said

Key milestones according to CMA includes:

A total of UGX 2.3 trillion  raised through public offers, and domestic market capitalization has grown to UGX 15.9 trillion with 9 locally listed companies with a total of 8 cross listed companies, The Collective Investment Schemes have mobilized UGX 5.6 trillion in savings as of December, 2025, Over 273,574 Ugandans now hold Securities Central Depository accounts, and more than 180,000 have invested through Collective Investment Schemes; a clear indication that the capital markets are becoming more inclusive and accessible, companies that have tapped into these public markets  employed over 11,000 Ugandan, spending over Ugx 792 billion in employee expenses and contributed in excess of Ugx 2.45 trillion in taxes, and returned over Ugx 1.15 trillion in dividends contributing to wealth creation among investors, private market over the last decade have raised over Ugx 1.8 trillion that has been channeled into priority sectors such as agro-industrialization and mining among others.

While highling on the theme of the celebrations.  “30 Years of Protecting Your Investments.” she said that “this theme reflects our journey over the past three decades and our unwavering commitment to safeguarding investors while promoting market growth. It is a reminder that trust is the foundation upon which strong capital markets are built and that investor protection remains central to everything we do”

Among the activities of the 30 year celebration that will climax with celebrations in October 2026, include: Nationwide investor education and public engagement programs, Capital Markets symposium, A storytelling and media campaign highlighting the journey of Uganda’s capital markets, A CMA @ 30 documentary series and stakeholder testimonials, The publication of the 30-Year Impact Report, The Capital Markets Awards to recognize key contributors to the market among other key activities among others.
