AWANI women-led enterprises transforming food system through nutrition solutions.
African Women Agribusiness Network (AWAN), with support from Global Alliance on Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Nutrition Impact at Scale (NIS) have joined hands to support women led enterprises to cone up with innovations in the food chains to improve nutrition uptake to address challenges and nutrition related illnesses.
According to the Country Director of AWAN Uganda, Joyce, Atwine Onebwa there is a need to close the gap existing between agriculture and Nutrition through partners to support the women in the nutrition ecosystem.
During a media convention organised by AWANI held on Thursday 23rd Aprul 2026 at AWANI office in Kampala, the CD Atwine highlighted that in order to minimize nutrition related challenges, women who take up to 70% in agriculture need to be supported to be recognized in spaces of production, through scaling upon health food knowledge, sensitisation on nutritious foods, among others to boost innovations on products, reduced cost of production and uptake of nutritious meals.
“Uganda looses over UGX1.9 Billion in solving nutrition challenges, but solutions lie in the 70% women in agriculture who are producing in the food value chain. AWANI is supporting women to be recognized and visible in spaces of production while earning from nutrition products” she said
She called upon the media to shape conversations to drive policy action, shape consumption behavior, unlock investment, boost Uganda’s global reputation among others.
Barbra Barungi from GAIN Uganda
Barbara Barungi, Programme Manager from GAIN Uganda said through collaborations there are supporting SMEs in Uganda in the food systems especially vegetables, fruits and others to improve nutrition among consumers of food to reduce disease stunting, obesity.
She invited the public to join them at an nutrition expo called “Ebyendisa Expo” from 30th April to 1st May 2026 at UMA Show ground to witness the difference nutrition solutions by various enterprises, testing vegetable recipes, among other innovations.
Martha Najulli and enterprise dealing in Mushrooms products such as snacks, tea bags, said that she focused on the product’s to create a solution to avert ailments and as an anti aging, and a suppresser of cancer with a nutritious content that also works as a food supplement.
